What Congress is trading

Members of Congress have to report their own trades within 45 days. These come from the reports filed with the Clerk of the House and with the Senate Office of Public Records, and every one links to the document it came from.

For the House, only trades a member appears to have chosen are shown. Most reported activity happens inside accounts run by someone else — a wealth manager, a family trust, a retirement plan — and those are left out, because nobody in Congress decided to make them. The Senate form does not report that distinction, so Senate trades are shown as filed, without any claim about who chose them.

Reported trades, by month

Purchases above the line and sales below, counted rather than added up: a report gives a band, never an amount.

Newest first. A report can arrive up to 45 days after the trade.

Largest reported

Ordered by the bottom of each band, because that is the only figure a filing commits to. The band is shown beside every one.

Free to read, no account needed. These come from periodic transaction reports filed with the Clerk of the House and with the Senate Office of Public Records, and every trade above links to the original document.

Two gaps worth knowing about. Around a tenth of House reports and a tenth of Senate ones are filed on paper and published as scans, which cannot be read without transcribing them by eye, so this is not a complete record of everything reported. In the Senate that shortfall is almost entirely one person: Senator Richard Blumenthal files on paper and nothing else, so none of his trades appear here.

The House form names the managed account a trade sits inside, so activity a wealth manager chose rather than the member is separated out. The Senate form does not ask, so Senate trades are shown without that distinction rather than presented as decisions the senator personally made.
